SEO for Therapists: How Private Practices Get Found

SEO for Therapists

Often, yes, if new clients come from search. 34% of patients who search for providers named Google search results among up to three sources that most influenced choosing a doctor (all doctors, not therapists). SEO for therapists is the work of matching your website and listings to how clients search.

Key takeaways

  • Search engine optimization (SEO) works when each page matches one way clients search: specialty, modality, location, insurance or online access.
  • Publish telehealth pages only for states where you can lawfully treat. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says providers must be licensed or legally permitted to practice in the state where the patient is located.
  • Reviews work differently for therapists. The American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics Code says psychologists do not solicit testimonials from current therapy clients.
  • A directory profile complements your website and does not replace it.
  • The StartMyWellness case reports 60% more organic traffic in six months, with no baseline or date window published.

How do clients search for a therapist?

Clients type a need, a method, a place and a payment route. Psychology Today’s directory page for Royal Oak, Michigan offers the same dimensions as filters, as displayed on October 19, 2026. Its filters cover specialties such as anxiety and trauma and insurance carriers. They also cover types of therapy such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), plus In Person or Online delivery.

Each dimension becomes a page decision:

  • Specialty: a page for each condition or client group you want more of.
  • Modality: a section or page for each method you are trained to deliver.
  • Location: a page for each office clients can visit.
  • Insurance: a page that lists accepted plans in readable text.
  • Online: a telehealth page for each state where you can treat.

Real searches follow part of the same pattern. The StartMyWellness case study lists “therapist in Michigan” and “online therapy near me” as examples of local and service searches the clinic’s site did not rank for.

What are good SEO keywords for therapists?

Good SEO keywords for therapists combine a specialty, a modality, a place and an access or payment term, and each phrase needs a page that can answer it honestly. The table shows illustrative patterns, not search volumes. Check volume in Google Keyword Planner, then use Search Console impressions for queries you already appear for.

Only target conditions and methods you are trained to treat. APA Standard 5.01 bars psychologists from false, deceptive or fraudulent statements about their training, experience or competence. Our guide to choosing keywords for a medical website covers the research method.

Google Business Profile for solo and group practices

Local SEO for therapists starts with the Business Profile, and Google’s eligibility guidelines decide who can have one. A business qualifies if it either has a physical location that customers can visit or travels to customers where they are. The guidelines do not address online-only businesses, so by that wording a therapist who sees clients only by video has no office to list. A rented mailing address, known as a virtual office, is not eligible.

A solo therapist gets one profile, not one per specialty. The same guidelines say a practitioner shouldn’t have multiple Business Profiles to cover all of their specializations. An office in a co-working space can be listed only if it maintains clear signage. It must also receive customers at the location during business hours and be staffed during business hours by your business staff. Check those conditions before listing a sublet room.

A group practice creates a profile for the location. An individual clinician gets their own profile only if they operate in a public-facing role and can be contacted directly at the verified location during stated hours. A clinician who sees clients only by video fails that test. Our local SEO guide for medical practices covers setup basics, citations and review mechanics.

Directories vs your own site: where does Psychology Today fit?

Psychology Today’s Royal Oak, Michigan page showed “600+” therapists on October 19, 2026. A client who lands there compares many practitioners inside a template the directory controls, and your profile competes with all of them. A profile is a rented position that reaches people already browsing. A website can rank for specific specialty, location and insurance queries and holds the booking path you control.

APA Standard 5.01 lists directory listings among public statements and bars psychologists from knowingly making public statements that are false, deceptive or fraudulent. Keep credentials, license, specialties and insurance details identical on every profile and on your website.

Specialty pages, location pages and telehealth by licensed state

Give each specialty you want more clients for its own page: who it helps, what sessions involve, which methods you use, fees and insurance, and how to book. Write every page from scratch. Google’s spam policies list “creating substantially similar pages that are closer to search results than a clearly defined, browseable hierarchy” as doorway abuse. They also name “pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page” as an example. Publish a location page only for an office clients can visit, and match it to the Business Profile.

Telehealth shifts the question from where your office is to where you can lawfully treat. HHS says providers must be “licensed or legally permitted to practice in the state where the patient is located”. Build telehealth pages on that rule:

  1. Create one page for each state where you hold a license or other legal authority to treat, and none for other states.
  2. State that the client must be physically in that state during the session. HHS advises providers to verify patient location and obtain consent before an appointment.
  3. Psychologists should check the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT), an interstate compact for licensed psychologists that requires licensure in the home state.
  4. Remove or redirect a state page when your authority for that state ends.

Reviews and testimonials: what do the ethics codes allow?

Google’s help page says a business can ask customers to leave reviews and strictly prohibits incentives for them. Two major ethics codes may narrow the first half of that advice for therapists.

CodeRule on testimonialsWho is covered
APA Ethics Code, Standard 5.05Psychologists do not solicit testimonialsCurrent therapy clients and others vulnerable to undue influence
American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014), Standard C.3.bCounselors who use testimonials do not solicit themCurrent clients, former clients and others vulnerable to undue influence

Neither text mentions online star ratings. Whether asking a client for a Google review counts as soliciting a testimonial is a question for your licensing board or professional association. ACA also says counselors discuss with clients the implications of any testimonial and obtain permission for its use. In our reading, that covers republishing a client’s review on your site. ACA is revising its code, and its project page says the final version will be published in fall 2026, so confirm the current text.

Our recommendation is not to ask current or former clients for reviews. Let reviews arrive unprompted, and ask colleagues and referral partners for professional endorsements, which involve no client. Google says prominence is also based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. So invest in links from professional associations and local organizations, and in pages worth linking to.

Replies carry risk too. HHS explains the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule in terms of protected health information (PHI). PHI is individually identifiable health information that relates to a person’s physical or mental health or condition, their care or payment for it. If the rule applies to your practice, thank the reviewer and never confirm that they are a client.

Case: StartMyWellness, a Michigan mental health clinic

StartMyWellness is a mental health clinic in Michigan that offers therapy, psychiatry and psychological testing, in person and online. SEO Rank Health has worked with it since December 2024, and our team rewrote and expanded its service pages and blog posts around user intent. The case study describes four steps in total:

  • Location keyword pages and Google Business listing improvements.
  • Service pages and blog posts rewritten around intent.
  • Titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links and schema.
  • Mobile usability, page speed and indexing structure.

Results as reported in the case study:

MetricReported result
Organic traffic+60% in 6 months
Online appointment requests+35%
Bounce rate-40%
Clicks40.1K
Impressions5.67M
Average click-through rate (CTR)0.7%
Average position19.6

The page also reports top-3 rankings for “Royal Oak therapist”, “online therapy Michigan” and condition-specific searches. Clicks divided by impressions gives 40.1K / 5.67M, about 0.71%, which matches the 0.7% CTR. An average position of 19.6 looks at odds with top-3 rankings. If the figure comes from Search Console, as the metric names suggest, that tool takes the topmost position for each query and averages across all queries with impressions. A few top-3 queries plus a long tail of low-ranking ones can produce 19.6. The page publishes no query-level split, so this is our reading, not a verified breakdown.

The limits matter for therapist SEO. SEO Rank Health reported these results for its own client, a single clinic. The page gives no start and end dates for the six months, no baseline for any percentage, and no tool, property or date range for the clicks and impressions. Appointment requests are not booked sessions or retained clients. Local, content, on-page and technical work ran together, so no single action earns the credit. Treat the case as an example of coordinated work, not a benchmark for another practice.

A 90-day plan for therapist SEO

Google’s SEO starter guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months. It advises waiting a few weeks to assess whether your work had beneficial effects. Treat day 90 as the first checkpoint, not the finish line.

Days 1-30: Foundation

Tasks: List the specialties and methods you are trained in and the states where you are licensed. Verify the Business Profile for each eligible office. Make directory profiles match your website. Set up Search Console and HIPAA-safe call tracking.

Done when: Every listing matches the website, and calls and forms are tracked.

Days 31-60: Pages

Tasks: Publish a page for each priority specialty, each office and each licensed telehealth state. Add an insurance page and FAQs. Link the pages to each other.

Done when: Pages are indexed, and each targets one query from the keyword map.

Days 61-90: Authority and measurement

Tasks: Earn links from professional associations and local organizations. Ask colleagues for endorsements. Reply to reviews without client details. Compare Search Console queries with consultation requests.

Done when: A day-90 report shows impressions, clicks and consultation requests against a day-0 baseline.

Where to start

Start with licensure and accuracy, not content. List the states where you can treat and the methods you are trained in, then make the Business Profile, directory profiles and website say the same things. If you hire SEO services for therapists, ask how the provider handles testimonial rules and state licensure. Practices that prefer a team can review SEO Rank Health’s local SEO service.

FAQ

Is SEO important for therapists?

Yes, when new clients come from search. SEO is one channel among several.

What are some good SEO keywords for therapists?

Combine a specialty, a modality, a place and an access or payment term, such as EMDR therapist online Michigan or couples counseling Ann Arbor. Build a page for a phrase only if you are trained and licensed to deliver that service. Check volume in Google Keyword Planner, then use Search Console impressions for queries you already appear for. The keyword map in this guide lists more patterns.

Is SEO still relevant in 2026?

Yes. Google’s documentation says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for artificial intelligence (AI) features in Google Search. It adds that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

How do I advertise myself as a therapist?

Combine a verified Google Business Profile for each eligible office, accurate directory profiles, a website with a page for each specialty and licensed state, and referrals from colleagues. Advertising and directory listings as public statements, so psychologists must keep every claim about training, credentials and services accurate. We advise against asking current or former clients for testimonials.

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

ChatGPT can draft outlines, FAQ wording and title options, but it cannot do SEO alone. Using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. It also says AI-generated content needs manual fact-checking before publishing. Never paste identifying client details into a chatbot.
